It’s a common misconception that hearing damage is just a normal part of military life, an inevitable risk of the job. However, this isn’t the case. While the armed forces are inherently risky and demanding, this does not justify neglecting basic health and safety measures.

Firing Ranges: This is a frequent and completely preventable source of hearing loss and tinnitus. Even a single gunshot near an unprotected ear can cause permanent, irreparable damage. It is essential that full hearing protection is provided and that it is mandatory at all times on the range, although historically, this has not always been adhered to.

Training Exercises: Similar to firing ranges, comprehensive hearing protection should be supplied and mandatory during all training exercises.

Vehicles, Equipment and Machinery: The Ministry of Defence, like any employer, is required to regularly monitor noise levels of all equipment considered loud and ensure that operators have sufficient hearing protection.

Inadequate Training: Even the highest quality hearing protection is ineffective if not used properly due to insufficient training.

Specialist Professions: Almost all roles in the armed forces involve some level of noise exposure, but certain positions, such as working in ship engine rooms, as aircraft engineers, or as band members, are inherently noisier.
